The Employment Channel (TEC) will launch the program “New York City Works” on WNET in the New York City market in the fall season, - the only show of its kind in the New York City market - to address career, lifestyle and employment issues for all New Yorkers who are working or looking for employment. The show will contain content similar to “Employ.com TV,” from which the show is derived, with a new focus exclusively on New York City employers, newsmakers, labor trends and re-employment issues for those affected by 9-11.
Differing from “Employ.com TV,” and in an effort to be as current and relevant to situations in NYC as possible, “New York City Works” will address the situation of 80,000 people who lost their jobs in New York City due to the events of September 11 with 11 different segments across the season’s episodes on the Consortium for Worker Education (CWE), the federally designated resettlement agency for those affected by the disaster. The season will kick off with a September 27 episode profiling the Emergency Employment Clearinghouse, the mechanism set up by CWE to assist all those affected by 9-11.
Hosted by Sonal Patel, New York City Works will include interviews with working people, career snapshots, and employment news. It will also serve as a public affairs resource program for anyone living and working in New York City.
“New York City is in a situation that it hasn’t seen in over 20 years with 9% unemployment, much of it due to 9/11,” said Broderick Byers, CEO of The Employment Channel. “Our work is cut out for us to provide program content with a proven track record which will be useful to New York in these difficult times. ‘New York City Works’ will be a program much like its predecessor, Employ.com TV, with interactive programming and web site content to support the program.”
In addition to its public affairs and resourceful programming mission, New York City Works will seek to drive viewers to its web site, www.employ.com, where viewers will find links to the employers covered in the episodes, referral to job ads and classifieds, some of the programming profiling the many parts of CWE, and other resources.
“Our agency has been deeply committed to offering programs and services for individuals and employers dislocated as a result of the tragic events of September 11th,” said Betty Wu, Commissioner of Employment for the City of New York. “For this reason, we applaud the Employment Channel for its ongoing dedication to provide valuable resources to those in need via its broadcast and interactive mediums. We are equally encouraged by their efforts to play an important part in the City's healing and rebuilding efforts.”
Guests for “New York City Works” will include U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao and New York City Commissioner of Employment Betty Wu, local business leaders, elected officials, major employers and people with unique careers in New York. New York City works will air on WNET at 6AM and 12:30PM Fridays.
Previews and interviews with Broderick Byers can be arranged by calling Tim Sullivan at 212-981-5234.
